Weekly TD-SCDMA Update August 25-31

- Ericsson recently introduced a new NodeB base station leveraging on China's homegrown TD-SCDMA technology at a technology exhibition held on August 21 in Beijing, China Tech News reported. The new device, claimed to be the first TD-SCDMA-enabled base station developed by a foreign company, is designed based on Ericsson's WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) technology. The device, utilizing the remote radio unit technology, allows for the site sharing between TD-SCDMA and GSM base stations.

- With its second-phase TD-SCMDA network development due to begin soon, China Mobile announced plans to expand TD-SCDMA commercial trials from the current 10 to 38 cities by the end of June 2009, XFN Asia reported on August 27. China Mobile is expected to invite bids for TD-SCDMA equipment for the second-phase network around October 2008. Meanwhile, the company also demands that all newly launched GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) phones should be equipped built-in TD-SCDMA functionality, Sina Tech reported on August 29.
